Personal Wellness as Therapy

Existing in ‘the body’ necessitates, by default, that care and attention be given (to) it for promoting improvement of well-being. Well-being (WB) is not facilitated by ‘quick-fix’ stratagems. WB, on the various levels of the whole individual, must be, as needed, addressed. Of importance is that the individual become familiar with themselves as the well-being journey is a personal endeavor. Uplifting the state of WB is a holistic enterprise; as small improvements are made, the entire individual is benefited.

Well-Being is the experiencing of health, happiness, and prosperity, including having good mental health, high life satisfaction, a sense of meaning or purpose, and the ability to manage stress. Well-being is comprised of various facets, just a light, when passing through a prism, reveals differing frequencies. It is necessary to have an awareness of these aspects of well being so that they can be properly assessed, methodically approached and incrementally incorporated into (a) person’s lifestyle with care and competence and continuance.

One should not rely on (any of) the available fads to establish a routine of well-being. Fads, as temporary crazes, are not meant to be extended, viable solutions. They are not compatible with long term goals of sustaining wellness initiatives. The individual must be clear about what their objectives are for well-being. As a fad is typically a quick-fix for a specific issue, it can never be a remedy for the diversity of challenges that hinder the acquisition of overall wellness.

The well-being journey requires that different areas be addressed. Emotional WB is concerned with intelligence and resilience in the emotional sphere. Physical WB encompasses nutrition, exercise, and sleep. Social WB addresses relationships and communication skills. Cognitive WB gives attention to the resolving of wandering, self deprecating thought patterns. Spiritual WB is about exploring purpose, meaning, and connection to something greater (as one perceives such). Environmental WB lends to health and happiness through creating supportive environments. A true program of WB Therapy will focus on prevention, growth, and self-empowerment

There is a part of the WB journey that is something to which many people give little regard. It involves the accessing and resolving the elements that lie hidden or repressed within the individual. This is self love in the pursuit of self knowledge. Gaining self knowledge requires facing, with brutal honesty, those darker aspects of self. Not to suffer but to utilize self love in the resolving of those traumas. This is an extremely personal phase in the WB journey. Gaining self knowledge necessitates having courage and engaging with commitment.

Each part of the WB Journey is important to the integral structure of personal wellness. The various facets that contribute to WB are intertwined. One aspect may affect, or be affected by, other aspects. Making one area better will, by default, foster resilience, integrity, and intentionality in the constitution of the individual. This journey does not have to be solitary. The individual may need some outside, knowledgeable input if an area is too challenging to be handled alone. If it can be done alone, then fine. If help is required, then by all means it should be sought out. The intent is facilitate improvement at a personal pace.

Each one of us is the captain of our own vessel (body). We have the capacity to pilot that vessel though beneficial waters of wellness. This capacity is actually an obligation that has been gifted (to) us. If this capacity is taken to be a chore, then the pursuance of wellness will be tough going. By taking stock of our present situation, we can either decide to maintain less than optimal wellness or undertake the steps needed make our wellness (journey) a priority. Adherence, for some, is driven by stepping into community while, for others, the lone road is the way to go. There will be, in either case, the need to interact, more or less, with others. We must go forward in wellness at our own pace.
