Good Health is an integral necessity for self-directed, independent, day to day functioning. Good Health can be narrowly defined as the physical capacity to function autonomously as required by various circumstances. The state of health care accessibility and support in the U.S.A. is, at best, barely minimal. Money, as a driving imperative for acquisition and administration of health care, is a factor that excludes an unfortunate majority of people. The ideal of physical fitness is presented as a desirable state that all should pursue. The reality is that pursuing fitness, aka health, as an achievable goal, for many, is not realized as a priority. The composition of an individual is reflective of their patterns of consumption. The intake of adequate quality, essential foodstuffs will promote overall health and well-being.
The health of the average person in the U.S.A. has degraded over the years. From 1900 to 2015, although life expectancy increased significantly, the leading causes of death changed from infectious diseases to chronic conditions. Chronic health conditions (i.e. heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes) can reductively impact physical capacity by causing a cycle of deconditioning due to decreased activity. However, consistent, appropriate physical activity offers numerous benefits for those with chronic conditions. Improvements in functional ability, better weight control, enhanced mental health, and reduced pain are quantifiable qualities that can be achieved and maintained. Health care begins with Self-Care. This approach gives the individual greater control over their health and wellness outcomes.

The lack of health care prioritization results in disparate availabilities including poor access, fragmentation, underfunded public systems, and a lack of accountability. The country’s health care system started with hospitals institutions being staffed and ran by religious or philanthropic organizations. These were not very ‘scientifically’ oriented in the beginning and thus many people were cared for inadequately. With modernization, came better care and more rigorous requirements. This segued into a system that is reliant on technology and operates for profit. To make money means that there must be customer flow-through. Thus, the emphasis on individual health takes a backseat to the financial bottom-line

Although physical fitness is a concern among the younger generations, the health profile for the overall population is less than adequate. In the U.S.A., people are generally unfit. Many adults adopt a mindset of ‘aging means progressive, deterioration’. They opt to allow gravity to take over and, thus, incur the weight gain, muscular atrophy, aerobic incapacitation and other failings facilitated by the lack of activity. Among those who put forth the initiative to join health club establishments. up to 67% of memberships are unused; other data shows that even with high membership numbers, a smaller percentage of members consistently use their membership. The children, whom in times past could be seen running around, expending energy, are experiencing an obesity epidemic due to lack of activity.

The composition of fuels utilized to maintain and promote physical activity and recovery are not agreed upon, en todo. The food industry as a whole, does not promote good health. As profit is a motivating factor, highly processed foods are the mainstay of what is manufactured for, promoted and sold to the average consumer in the U.S.A. Diets and shortcuts are a proliferating mainstay in the health arena. They are presented as ‘feasible options’ to the consistent consumption of nutritive foodstuffs. Quality nutrition consists of foods and food combinations that contain the constituents needed to support health and well being. Emphasis on fruits, veggies, and whole grains provides essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, which are crucial for preventing chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and for managing weight.
To eat healthfully, intelligently, naturally is to lay the groundwork for a better existence. We, as the populous, must commit ourselves to actions that facilitate wellness and health. Health care, as a luxury for many, can be accessed even to a modicum degree. However, health is a personal endeavor to be facilitated and furthered by the individual. Each person is capable of being their own dietician, their own fitness trainer, their own doctor.
