Electrolytes – Hydration

The return of warmer weather motivates people to be more active. The need for proper physiological mineral balance is tantamount during this time of the year. Manufactured electrolyte drinks are marketed to appeal to the consumer, in addition to providing nutrient replenishing benefits. The body is complex but the physiological requirements are, concomitantly, not complex. The electrolyte needs of the body can be met with home gathered ingredients.

Fruits are a good source of minerals

People are drawn to be more active when conditions so allow. These types of individuals could be called fair weather exercisers. Not to say that preferentially exercising in favorable conditions is lacking in benefits. Movement, any movement, stimulates the body to physical adapt to the imposed stresses; thereby become ‘stronger’ and more resilient. Yet, in addition to the exercise, warmer weather is, by itself, a stressor with which one must reckon.

The term homeostasis implies is a dynamic process that can alter internal bodily conditions as required to survive external challenges. Important, also, is that homeostatic regulation reflects the complex interaction of multiple feedback systems that can be modifiable by higher control centers. Exercise, strenuous exercise in particular, along with heat, are variables that necessitate re-establishing internal biological stasis. This internal balance requires and adequate supply of important minerals, which are lost due to sweating. .

Water is important but will not provide electrolyte replenishment

Electrolyte drinks are hugely popular. They do provide mineral replacement benefit and sensory stimulated gratification. Many people choose to drink them because the flavors are more pleasant than water and they are convenient. However there are ‘levels’ to the mineral / carbohydrate content of the several drinks (that are) available to the public. Some (electrolyte drinks) are recommended for intense workouts (>60+ minutes). Others are ‘enhanced waters’ that contain a smattering of vitamins, and a few brands add in sodium and/or potassium. The competitive, recreational athletes, up to, professional athletes are those who would be best benefited by the electrolyte drinks. One should know why they choose to consume of these drinks and be aware of what they contain.

What demands does physical activity place upon the body?? Several different operations occur when the body is performing physical activity. There is the energy requirement phase. There is an energy source for a predominance of muscular engagement. There is an energy source for more aerobically centered activity. Typically, various duties do involve a combination of both .systems. Some exercise regimens give preference to one or the other. Both systems operate by raising body temperature. This results in loss of electrolytes due to sweating. Electrolyte replacement requirements are directly related to intensity of activity.

Most periods of exertion can be remedied with sodium intake. Sodium signals your kidneys to retain more of the fluid you consume. Your body does not make or store much sodium, Sodium can be replenished through diet or, in light of prolonged periods of sweating, through supplementation. Sodium, when combined with Glucose(, Sucrose or Fructose) facilitates a more thorough supplementation. our kidneys, there is a major part of our nephrons The kidneys need both glucose and sodium to reabsorb water instead of excreting it out of our bodies. Glucose is absorbed into the nephrons lending to reabsorption of sodium and water. This keeps the individual hydrated.

The author is fairly active. He like to exercise while shirtless in the warmer months. With the regular occurrence of sweating comes the regular consumption of a (very) dilute solution of raw sugar and Celtic (or Himalayan) salt. The amounts of these constituents that are added to water are minimal, just barely ‘to taste’. There are many electrolyte drink recipes that can be found on-line. However, there will be those individual who will purchase the manufactured drinks for the sake of convenience. Whichever route one chooses, they should be familiarize with the ingredients used for the specific product. It would also be a good idea to check with a physician before utilizing any manufactured or self made electrolyte solution.

A balanced diet will provide the majority of electrolytes that the person will require.
